Read Banned Books: Toni Morrison’s Beloved

September 22, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm EDT

Few books have inspired, moved, and changed readers more than Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Few books have also been more challenged by those who would seek to censor and ban works of art. To honor its creator—a Library Lion and Lifetime Trustee—an all-star lineup of writers, actors, and thinkers will return to Morrison’s indelible work with readings, performances, and conversations.

FEATURING

Erroll McDonald, Vice President and Executive Editor in the Knopf Doubleday division of Penguin Random House.

Alicia Hall Moran, vocalist and composer.

Imani Perry, author and Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University.

Kaitlyn Greenidge, author, Features Director at Harper’s Bazaar, and contributing opinion writer for The New York Times.

Robert Jones, Jr., author of The New York Times bestselling novel, The Prophets, a finalist for the 2021 National Book Award for Fiction.

And more to be announced.

Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison was hailed by Oprah Winfrey as “our conscience, she is our seer, she is our truth-teller.” Beloved, originally published in 1987, found Morrison at the height of her powers, “trying,” as she herself wrote, “to make the slave experience intimate…to render enslavement as a personal experience.” Whether you are discovering the story of Sethe, Denver, Beloved, and Paul D for the first time, or they live on in your well-worn copy of the book, join us in paying tribute to Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece.

Produced in partnership with LIVE from NYPL.

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
